1. Mike Smith was born on June 13, 1959. He shares this June 13th birthday with poet W.B. Yeats, TV host Ralph Edwards, actor Ben Johnson, actor Paul Lynde, baseball player Billy Williams, actor Malcolm McDowell, actor Richard Thomas, professional wrestler Jacques Rougeau, actress Ally Sheedy, journalist Hannah Storm, football player Sam Adams, actress Kat Dennings, and actresses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

2. Mike Smith played linebacker from 1977 to 1981 at East Tennessee State University.

3. Mike Smith spent 1987 to 1998 at Tennessee Tech where he served as defensive line coach, special teams coach, and eventually defensive coordinator.

4. Mike Smith’s first NFL job came in 1999 as a defensive line assistant coach with the Baltimore Ravens.

6. Mike Smith had been the defensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2007. After becoming Falcons head coach in 2008, his first offensive coordinator under him was Mike Malarkey who would eventually be hired as the head coach of Smith’s previous team the Jaguars.

7. The Sporting News named Mike Smith the NFL Coach of the Year three times in five seasons (2008, 2010, and 2012).

His First Win

8. Mike Smith got his first win as an NFL head coach in his very first game when the 2008 Falcons defeated the Lions 34-21 on September 7, 2008.

That First Coach’s Challenge

9. Mike Smith’s first coaches challenge came on September 14, 2008 against Tampa Bay in his first season in the league. On a 3rd and 12 play, Matt Ryan had completed a pass to Roddy White for 11 yards, bringing up a 4th and 1 situation. After successfully challenging the spot the play was changed to a 13 yard reception and the Falcons were credited with a first down.

10. During his time with the Falcons, Mike Smith challenged 43 plays. The calls on the field were upheld 25 times while he succeeded in getting 18 overturned for is team.
