It is hard to think of the Yankees too much without also thinking about Derek Jeter. He is the perfect person to personify this legendary team. He has played the game the “right way” throughout his career too. Here are five fun facts about this great Yankees shortstop.

Five Before Him

Derek Jeter was picked by the Yankees with the sixth overall selection in the 1992 MLB Amateur Draft. The five players picked ahead of him were Phil Nevin, Paul Shuey, B.J. Wallace, Jeffrey Hammonds, and Chad Mottola.

His First Game Ever

Derek Jeter went 0 for 5 in his first Major League Baseball game, a Yankees loss to the Mariners in 1995.

That Took Awhile

On June 18, 2005, Derek Jeter hit the very first grand slam home run of his career. It came in an 8-1 victory off the Cubs and was hit in the sixth inning off of Joe Borowski. The three players on base at the time were Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams, and Robinson Cano.

Going Down… 25 Times

The first opposing pitcher to strike out Derek Jeter 25 times or more during his career was Pedro Martinez.

Just Missed It!

In 2006, Derek Jeter batted .343 with 14 home runs, 97 RBI, and 34 stolen bases. He finished in second place in the voting for American League MVP, just losing out on the award to Justin Morneau of the Twins.
