Notre Dame is famous for the football team they trot out on the field every fall. Their basketball team has had a successful and interesting history too though. Here is a look at five fun facts about Notre Dame basketball.

The First Triple Double

The first Notre Dame basketball player to record a triple double was Chris Thomas who had 24 points, 11 assists, and 11 steals in a game during the 2001 season.

Grabbin’ Boards In The Big Time

The first player from Notre Dame to average over 9 rebounds a game in the NBA was Bill Laimbeer.

The First Ever

The first Notre Dame Consensus All-American in basketball was Edward “Moose” Krause in 1932. Krause would go on later to serve as head coach of the team he starred for.



Where It All Started

DePaul University’s Hall of Fame head coach Ray Meyer played basketball at Notre Dame from 1936 to 1938 and also served as an assistant coach with the team for awhile.

The Suns And The Bucks Made It Happen

The first year that two Notre Dame basketball players were both taken in the first round of the NBA Draft was in 1974 when the Suns took John Shumate with the fourth overall pick and the Bucks took Gary Brokaw with the 18th overall pick.
