Five Fun Facts From Week 1 Of The 2013 NFL Season

Filed under: 5 Fun Facts — by Mark on September 11, 2013

1. The First Time Ever

The Kansas City Chiefs opened up the 2013 season with a 28-2 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. This was the first time in history that an NFL game had ended with that score.

2. Way To Start It Off!

When Colin Kaepernick threw for 412 yards in the 49ers season opening win over the Packers on September 8, 2013, it was the first 400 yard game in Week 1 in franchise history.

3. 8? Only 8?

Russell Wilson took the NFL by storm in 2012 and opened up 2013 by guiding his Seahawks to an opening week win over the Carolina Panthers. Wilson made a name for himself not just throwing but running with the ball in 2012, racking up three games where he finished with over 50 yards rushing. He had eight rushing yards in that opening week victory over the Panthers. That was less rushing yards than he had in any game during the whole 2012 season.

4. And He’s Done It Twice!

In the 49ers win over the Packers in Week 1 of the 2013 season, San Francisco receiver Anquan Boldin racked up 208 receiving yards. This was only the fourth time a receiver had caught over 200 yards worth of passes on the opening game of the season since the AFL-NFL merger of 1970. The other three times it was done was by Wes Chandler of the Saints in 1979, Irving Fryar of the Dolphins in 1994, and Anquan Boldin himself while playing for Arizona in 2003. This makes him the only player ever to have done this twice. He also did it the second time 10 years and one day after doing it the first time.

5. A Family Thing

Eli and Peyton Manning both threw for over 400 yards in their team’s games in Week 1 of the 2013 NFL season. This means that when they meet this coming weekend that it will be the first time in NFL history that two quarterbacks face each other in a game with both coming off of a 400 yard passing performance.
