The First To Do So Twice

The first opposing player Zack Greinke gave up more than one home run to was Miguel Olivo. He hit both off of him during Greinke’s rookie year, in a Mariners win over the Royals on August 27, 2004.

A Rough Start

After a rough beginning that included an 8-11 record as a rookie and a 5-17 record in his second season, Zack Greinke’s career win-loss record did not go above .500 until late in 2011, his eighth year in Major League Baseball.

The First To 20

The first opposing player to get 20 or more hits off of Zack Greinke during his career was A.J. Pierzynski.

The First As A Dodger

The first player Zack Greinke struck out after joining the Los Angeles Dodgers was pitcher Jonathan Sanchez of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

His First All-Star Game

Zack Greinke made the All-Star Game for the first time in 2009. In that game he pitched one inning, the fourth, and struck out two. The players he struck out were David Wright and Shane Victorino.

Ron Cey, nicknamed the Penguin, was one of the key members of the Los Angeles Dodgers of the 1970s and early 1980s. He was a fan favorite both for his defense at third base as well as what he could do with his bat. He later played with the Cubs for four seasons before finishing his career in 1987 with one season with Oakland A’s. Here are some fun facts about this great baseball player.

The Penguin?

Ron Cey’s nickname was The Penguin. He was given this nickname by a manager he had during the minor leagues. That manager, Tommy Lasorda, would also end up being his manager in the majors as well.

A WSU Cougars First!

Ron Cey was the first Major League Baseball player out of Washington State University to get 1,000 or more hits in the big leagues. He would be the school’s all time leader in major league hits until he was passed by John Olerud.

The Fourth Ever!

Ron Cey was the fourth Dodgers player named the World Series MVP when he won the award in 1981. He actually tied as the fourth as he shared the award that year with Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager. The first three were Johnny Podres in 1955, Larry Sherry in 1959, and Sandy Koufax who won it in both 1963 and 1965.

Grand Slam Home Runs

Ron Cey hit seven grand slam home runs during his career. He hit five while with the Dodgers and two while with the Cubs. The seven major league pitchers to give up grand slam home runs to Ron Cey during his career were Tom Griffin of the Astros, Ron Reed of the Phillies, Rick Camp of the Braves, Tom Seaver of the Mets, Ed Halicki of the Giants, Scott Garrelts of the Giants, and Bryn Smith of the Expos.

The Most?

The pitcher who struck out Ron Cey more times than any other was Tom Seaver. In 102 at bats, Seaver struck him out 24 times. The pitcher Cey would get the most hits off of during his career was Jim Barr. In just 75 at bats against him, Ron Cey had 31 hits for a .413 career average against him.
